RMR - Resting Metabolic Rate
Understand your metabolism ... Reach your goals!
Resting metabolic rate (RMR) or resting energy expenditure (REE) is a measure of the amount of fuel (fat and glucose) your body burns in the resting state, to maintain the body’s basic cellular metabolic activity and vital functions, such as respiration and normal body temperature. It is important as REE accounts for around 60-65 % of our total energy expenditure.
It is vital to measure RMR (REE) if you are trying to lose body fat or build muscle mass.
Accurate RMR testing
RMR (REE) is unique to each person and is affected by many factors including age, gender, genetics, fat free lean mass, environmental temperature, medications including caffeine, nicotine, sedatives, and pain relievers, as well as thyroid and other hormone levels.
This test enables an accurate measurement of the exact number of kilojoules your body burns at rest. It is particularly helpful if you are working with a Dietitian or Nutritionist towards specific weight loss goals and is much more accurate than using formulas to estimate REE.
The REE test is painless and relaxing and is like a 10 to 15-minute meditation session. Resting physically and mentally in the lying position while under a glass canopy allows us to measure your steady state consumption of O2 and your output of CO2.
As the test is very sensitive, it can be corrupted by many factors, so careful preparation is essential.
Ideally, we ask that you:
- Avoid exercise for 12 hours before the test
- Fast for at least 8 hours before the test
- Avoid alcohol, tobacco and caffeine for at least 8 hours beforehand
After the completion of the test, we can immediately discuss the results with you and fine-tune your diet and training strategies to ensure you achieve your goals.
